Today I want to know about your favorite odd but necessary kitchen tools, even if they are—gasp— single-use . In the world of kitchen appliances, there are the obvious workhorses—the items I can’t (and shouldn’t be expected to) live without. These include my   stick blender , my giant wooden spoon, my cast iron pan, and (shockingly) my   immersion circulators   (all three of them). But then there are the surprise must-haves, the true heroes that I never saw coming. Single-function kitchen appliances   don’t usually get a ton of love , but when we asked you all for your favorites, you had some   very   enthusiastic product recommendations. Some were old favorites of mine, but some of you managed to suggest items that we had never even heard of. Below are some of our favorites. Fruit Slicers, Cutters, and Peelers Though I’m sure peeling fruit with a knife is well within everyone’s culinary capabilities, dedicated fruit peelers and slicers make the job   so much   quicker, and I love anything that let’s me put food in my mouth more quickly.   Mango splitters,   apple slicers, and   pineapple corers   all help one achieve that, and you love them for it. Garbage Disposal All disposals have an overload feature that automatically shuts off the power when the motor becomes overloaded and gets too hot. Once the motor cools, simply push the reset button on the side of or under the unit. On the other hand, if it hums but doesn't spin, it may have something stuck in it. Switch the disposal off, then try working through it by turning the blades with a special disposal wrench (sold at home centers) or by turning a bottom bolt. Many disposals have an Allen wrench for that purpose, inset on the bottom of the machine.
